Well yes, I always say, hang gliding is really extreme… .., but extremely and only wonderful. Any activity can become extreme if we want it, practicing it beyond our own limits. Rather, it must be said that free flight in hang gliding is a real aeronautical activity which therefore presupposes the knowledge and practice of that aeronautical culture which by definition means a culture of attention and safety. The Val Comino Free Flight flight school run by the instructor Fabio Melisurgo and a team of other instructors and expert pilots exercises in association with the Aero Club flight school of Ciociaria, being our school specialized only in hang gliding courses. .

Other activities are carried out at Aero Club della Ciociaria, such as paragliding, motor hang gliding, multi-axis and helicopters.

Our hang-gliding flight course in the Comino Valley is structured in a very flexible way so as to allow a correct and rapid learning of the fundamentals of hang-gliding in a personalized way for different students, progressive and complete.

Our flight school is certified by Aeci (Aero Club of Italy). The flight courses are held throughout the year and are characterized by the extensive use of BIPOSTO techniques, which have shown greater safety, ease and speed in teaching. The equipment used is of the best, both in terms of the choice of materials and the constant attention to the safety checks applied.

All aspiring pilots begin to fly with TANDEM flights which aim to facilitate easy learning of the necessary piloting technique. Once able to fly the hang glider with ease, they will continue and will be followed step by step with the first detachments from the ground, on the school pitch in the hills, until the complete improvement of the take-off and landing technique. All workouts are always preceded and followed by theory lessons and commentary notes that make the training path even easier.

The practical part involves learning and getting to know the equipment, the assembly of the hang glider, the necessary checks and the first acclimatization runs with a delta on the plain. The repetition of easy exercises, carried out in the hills with a slight slope, will allow the first deadlifts from the ground. A dream, to see the earth flow beneath you while you are suspended lightly in the air. From that moment on you will want with all your determination to return and return to experience those feelings and that intoxication. You won't go back easily.

The course is practiced on weekends on Saturdays and Sundays and the various activities are organized depending on the weather conditions. Presumably after about 20 lessons, 10 in tandems and 10 at the school camp, you will be ready to face the first high flight on your own, followed by the instructor via radio. 30 high flights will be required to be able to take the final exam useful for obtaining the VDS flight certificate (Recreational Sports Flight). In order to enroll in the course you must be at least 16 years old and be in a healthy and robust constitution. Attending the flight course will be an opportunity for you to discover the magnificence of the Comino Valley in all its aspects and a fantastic family of friends, being warmly welcomed by all future pilots, colleagues and possible members of the club.

Achievement of the VDS flight certificate "Recreational Flight"

The release of the pilot certificate and flight booklet takes place when and if at the end of the hang gliding course the final exam is passed to be taken in the presence of the examiners of the Aero Club of Italy.

The VDS Flight Certificate is as if it were a real driving license required to fly with this type of aircraft without an engine and is legally recognized internationally. It certifies the qualification of a hang glider or paraglider pilot.

Vademecum for free flight students

We briefly summarize the most important points of the didactic activity for obtaining the free flight certificate, with particular attention to those relating to safety and quality of teaching.

For all the rest, please refer to the technical, operational and didactic regulations.

• At least two months must elapse after placement on a course and exam.

• 33 hours of theory are provided, divided as follows:

2h introduction

3h legislation, navigation, voice

5h aerodynamics

6h meteorology

2h tools

4h piloting technique

2h technology and performance

5h security

2h examination of the flight areas, operations and emergency landings

2h first aid

• The practical activity must consist of:

at least 16 hours of practical activity (including the school field)

at least 30 solo high flights

at least 5 hours of solo flight

in at least 3 separate flight sites

at least 2 didactic flights in two places, one of which before the first solo high flight, performed with the instructor or alternatively with a self-instructor officially registered in the school staff and under the supervision of the instructor

• The didactic activity must be documented by the student in the report issued by the school, on which he will record:

the number of the lesson and the date

the topic of the exercise

the number of exercises carried out

any errors and problems

• Equipment used for didactic activity;

hang gliding or basic paragliding (maximum EN B)

rescue parachute specific for the vehicle and appropriate to the weight (also in the two-seater)

back protector for paragliding

helmet

• On high flights there must always be two instructors or an instructor and an assistant instructor, one of the two must be taking off and the other landing.

• The school must provide liability insurance coverage with the characteristics required by law.

Accident coverage is not mandatory but we recommend it.
